The Importance of Rules

Flow chart showing three broad categories representing a spectrum of approaches to working with rules. Basil Vandegriend, http://www.basilv.com

We went Christmas tree hunting Thursday. As we pulled into Moon Valley Nursery, I said to the Midgets, “There are three rules to Christmas tree hunting: Stay close to Mommy. Stay close to Mommy. And stay close to Mommy.” I waited a moment for the instructions to sink in. Then I asked, “Okay, what are the rules?”

There was only a brief pause from the backseat before Gbot, who just turned two, piped up: “Do not…touch…the Christmas trees.”

I think Mr. Vandegriend needs to add another bubble to his chart but I am at a loss as to what word would appear in it. At least we are trying.

Which bubble do you belong in?
